Who doesn’t love a good costume? Especially around this time of year, individual members and Phi Mu chapters are likely selecting costumes and planning theme parties. The themes and costumes that are chosen can say a lot about Phi Mu and our members. Sometimes what members may intend is not how a costume or theme is perceived.
Sisters may propose ideas that can be offensive to others. They may think the idea is funny, timely, trendy or unique and suggest it “all in good fun.”
However, fun should never come at the expense of others. Halloween costumes are only fun when they do not make fun of other people. Do not select a costume in which another culture, religion or sex is worn – by doing so, you perpetuate stereotypes of those who do not have a costume to take off. Carefully consider the possible negative or hurtful impact, even if unintentional, of your costume choice and party theme.
All members are responsible for holding each other accountable when making these decisions. If you need to address a concern and have conversation with a sister or a friend that might be difficult, we have a Halloween Costume Guide that provides you with tips on how to approach this important topic.
